We live in a culture that is increasingly claiming “Love is God.” Love is not God. Yet, God is love. The difference between those two ideas is the difference between apostasy and faith, between life and death. This January, with some consideration of C.S. Lewis’s The Four Loves, we will engage with biblical narratives (Sacrifice of Isaac, David and Jonathan, Onesimus, Song of Solomon, etc.) that exemplify both the natural loves and the Divine. We will also take up some direct statements and admonitions of Scripture that speak to these issues (John 13:34, 1 John 3:16, Romans 13, etc.). Our goal is to walk away with a full midweek series starting on Ash Wednesday on the four loves. That series aims to help our hearers better understand and rejoice in Divine love by which the Holy Spirit informs and transforms the love of neighbor into something more than natural love. The workshop will also take up sermons for Holy Week that are directly related to and grow out of the theme but based upon the propers for the days.
