Yahweh called Hosea to be His prophet by calling him to marry a whore. Hosea’s marriage was a graphic illustration of the infidelity of Israel to Yahweh. Were that not enough, each of Hosea’s children would also embody Israel’s unfaithfulness. Whoring wife and whoring children (Hos. 1:2)—shocking and offensive language that matches the depth of Israel’s sin. Yet such infidelity is not limited to eighth-century BC Israel. It remains today as we stray from Christ, chasing after our idols.
Yahweh called Hosea not only to lay bare Israel’s infidelity (the preaching of the Law) but also to promise the reconciliation of Israel to Yahweh (the preaching of the Gospel). Hosea promised an eschatological restoration of their relationship, which dawned in the life and ministry of Christ and will be fully realized upon His return. Reconciled to the Father by Christ, we are also called to reconcile with one another—reconciled marriages, families, congregations, and more.
The 2027 Lenten Preaching Workshop will explore Yahweh’s prophetic word through Hosea. Drawing from the 2027 CPH Lenten series Reconciled to the Father, we will engage Hosea, learn from his potent prophetic proclamation, and discuss how Yahweh’s word through him can frame our Lenten preaching.
Fee: $50 per person; includes lunch.
